يتناول هذا المؤلف الفلسفة الإجتماعية والإتجاهات النظرية فى علم الإجتماع ويهدف إلى تبيان الإختلافات بينهما حتى لا يؤدى عدم إظهار هذه الفوارق إلى الخلط بين الفلسفة الإجتماعية والنظرية فى علم الإجتماع.
وإستخدام المؤلف فى هذه الدراسة المنهج التاريخى, إذ تناول تسلسلاً تاريخياً للفلسفة الإجتماعية بادئة بالفلسفة الإجتماعية فى مصر القديمة والهند القديمة وحتى النظريات التعاقدية التى ظهرت فى القرنين السابع عشر والثامن عشر.
كما إستخدم المنهج المقارن, فقد قارن بين الإتجاهات النظرية التى ظهرت حديثاً فى علم الإجتماع, كالإتجاه الوضعى, والتاريخى, والنفسى, والتحليلى والوظيفى, والحتمية الإقتصادية. وبالإضافة إلى ذلك إستخدم المنهج النقدى.
وقد إستقى المؤلف من هذا الكتاب معلومات تخص أفعال الإنسان كما أوردها ارسطو, والتفكير الإجتماعى عند الرومان القدامى؛ والإتجاه التطورى التاريخى الذى يتمثل كما أورد الكتاب فى سان سيمون, وسبنسر, ولويس هنرى مورجان, ومن المدرسة النفسية وليام جراهام سمنر.
وقد إنقسم الكتاب إلى إثنى عشر فصلاً هى: الفصل الأول تحديد مفهوم المصطلحات المستخدمة, الفصل الثانى الفلسفة الإجتماعية القديمة, الفصل الثالث التفكير الإجتماعى عند الفلاسفة المسيحين (العصور الوسطى), الفصل الرابع التفكير الإجتماعى عند فلاسفة المسلمين, الفصل الخامس عصر النهضة, الفصل السادس النظريات التعاقدية فى القرنين السابع عشر والثامن عشر, الفصل السابع الإتجاهات النظرية فى علم الإجتماع فى القرن التاسع عشر والعشرين, الفصل الثامن الإتجاه التطورى التاريخى, الفصل التاسع الإتجاه التحليلى, الفصل العاشر الإتجاه النفسى, الفصل الحادى عشر الإتجاه الوظيفى, الفصل الثانى عشر إتجاهات نظريات اخرى.
