لم تكن القدس موضعاً جغرافياً جرت عليه أحداث سجّلها التاريخ فحسب، ولم تكن موطناً يتغنى به سكانه المقيمون به أو المغتربون عنه، بل هي قيمة رمزية تحتل مكانة خاصة في كل قلب مؤمن، ينشأ حبها في قلبه مع تلقيه أولى الإشارات السماوية والوحي الإلهي الخاتم، وتعيش معها في قلب المثال التاريخي، وجوهر الصراع الفاصل بين الحق والباطل، ولطالما كانت القدس مصدراً من مصادر الإلهام في تاريخنا القديم والوسيط والمعاصر، وإذا قمنا بتخصيص البحث في مساحات القلوب لدى المتكلمين باللسان العربي فسنجد للقدس حضورها اللافت وطعمها المميز ومكانها البارز، وشواهد ذلك واسعة ممتدة، ولذلك انتخب لها الأستاذ الدكتور يوسف حطيني، وهو الباحث الخبير الذي جمع تلك الشواهد الثمينة من بين الكنوز المتراكمة وبسط فيها الرأي والتحليل والنظر سالكاً في ذلك منهج البحث الأكاديمي الموضوعي.
ولعل أكثر ما يحمل مشاعر الأمة والذهنية الجمعية فيها هو التراث الديني المسنَد، والسلوك الشعبي التطبيقي، والفنون الأدبية التي يسجلها أكثر الشهود تأثراً بالمسار الشعبي والثقافة الدينية السائدة هم الشعراء المتفننون في أوجه القول، ولذلك كان البحث في مادة الشعر عن بيت المقدس نموذجاً للحيوية الفنية والشعبية والثقافية لدى شعب هذه المنطقة والشعوب الممتدة من حولها على امتداد جغرافيتهم، ولذلك لا عجب أن تجد الكثير من الغنى والثراء في مثل هذه الدراسات.
