تتناول الدراسة التي يضمها هذا الكتاب الجملة العربية ليس من ناحية فلسفتها التعبيرية أو مستوياتها الدلالية، وإنما من حيث بنيتها التركيبية التي هي بطبيعة الحال غير منفصلة عن فلسفة التعبير أو مستويات الدلالة. إن للجملة عناصر تلتزم مواقعها التابعة وعناصر ذات مواقع متحركة ضمن قانون مرن ومتماسك للتعبير العربي. هذه العناصر بثباتها وتحركها وإمكانيات ذلك، هي الموضوع المحوري لهذه الدراسة.
وهذا لا يعني أن الباحث يجري دراسة إحصائية حول أنساق التعبير العربي بمختلف إمكانياته، بل هو يدرس ركائز هذه الأنساق التي تنبني الجملة عليها، سواء فيما يتعلق بالجملة الفعلية أم الاسمية مفرداً للأولى مجالاً أوسع لأن إمكانيات تحرك التكملات فيها أكثر ما سيرى القارئ والباحث لا يتناول الجملة العربية في مرحلة زمنية معيّنة، لأن منطلقات الجملة هي نفسها وأن تكن الأنساق المستعملة تختلف من عصر إلى عصر ومن كاتب إلى كاتب ومن أسلوب إلى أسلوب. وقد جاء قسم كبير من الشواهد من كتّاب معاصرين، وبالدرجة الأولى انطوان غطاس كرم في "كتاب عبد الله" ذي الأسلوب التأملي الشاعري، وميخائيل نعيمة في "يا ابن آدم" بأسلوبه الفكري الحواري، وخليل تقي الدين في قصته "العائد" لتكون الجملة منتقاة من أساليب ومواضيع متنوعة، دون أن يعني ذلك حصر الجملة بكتّاب معنيين أو كتب معينة. وجملة النثر هي التي تناولها الباحث بالدراسة لأنها تصلح لدراسة الأنساق التعبيرية أكثر من الجملة الشعرية التي تنمو منحى التفرد في التعبير ما استطاعت إلى ذلك سبيلاً، وتميل إلى التفلت من الأنساق السائدة تحت هاجس الجدّة والإبداع.
وحرص الباحث وهو يدرس الجملة النثرية الإشارة إلى الصيغ التي تستعمل غالباً في الشعر أو التي نقترب من مواصفات التعبير الشعري وبالنسبة للمصطلح المستعمل في هذه الدراسة فإنه غير محصور بمدرسة لغوية معيّنة قديمة أم حديثة بقدر ما كان المقصود منه إيفاء الفرص بدقة ووضوح، خصوصاً وأن الجملة العربية تتداخل فيها علوم البلاغة والنحو وتأخذ حيّزاً مهماً من علم اللغة الحديث (الألسنية).
