يبين الكتاب النظرية البنائية على يد فونت وأهم ما يميزها أن أصحابها لم يعنوا بالسلوك الظاهري بقدر ما كانوا يعنون بتحليل الخبرات الشعورية وأهم روادها تنشر وفونت وفلهام وكارل ستحث ثم يعدد أهمية النظرية البنائية و السيكولوجيا البنائية للخبرة الشعورية و مبادئ هذه النظرية و خصائصها و عيوبها و أما النظرية الوظيفية فقد ظهرت كَرَد و اعتراض على المدرسة البنائية و هي أول مدرسة أميركية تهتم بدراسة العقل من حيث وظائفه.
ثم يعرض مزايا و عيوب و أهم معتقدات النظرية الوظيفية ثم يعدد أبرز مجالاتها و ركائزها و منطلقاتها و يشير الى النظرية الإنسانية التي نشأت كحركة اعتراض على كل من المدرسة التحليلية و السلوكية فيعدد مبادئها و موقف هذه النظرية من التربية و يعدد أساليبه كالتعليم الحر و التعلم بالبحث و الفصل المفتوح و التعلم بالنقاش التلقائي.
ثم يبين النظرية العقلية و اهتمامها بالمعرفة معددا علماءها "جانييه من سويسرا " "برونز من أمريكا" ثم موقف هذه النظرية من المعرفة و النمو العقلي و كيف تتعامل مع مدارس علم النفس و يتناول الكتاب نظرية المحاولة و الخطأ لثورندايس تفسير ثورندايك للتعلم و تفسيره للسلوك و الوقائع التجريبية و موضوع و مقياس التعلم و نظرية سكنر يوضح الشروط العامة للتعلم والبرنامج التعليمي والمثيرات الصفية ونظرية هل والعوامل المتوسطة.
