الكتاب هو قصة "الموارنة في الحرب" وليس الغرض، مما سيُروى في هذه الفصول استعراض ما كان وصار الحكم عليه، بل تقديم مراجعة شخصية قد تكون مفيدة لمن يقرأها، كما قد تكون مساعدة على فهم الكثير من الوقائع. وهي، بالتأكيد، نموذج عن تجارب أخرى عديدة عاشها آلاف من اللبنانيين وتقلّبوا في نارها، فغيرت فيهم وفي ذواتهم، وغيّرت أيضاً في أحوال لبنان.
ويقول المؤلف أن ثمة ولادة جديدة للبنان هي الآن جنين في النفوس والقلوب. ولادة لا تعني تقسيماً له، طبعاً، أو تبديلاً في أسباب وجوده ودوره بل تأكيداً لهذا الوجود، وللدور والمهمة، يعبّر عن إيمان بهذا الوطن لم يكن موجوداً أو على الأقل لم يكن من قبل بالحرارة نفسها أو بالعمق نفسه.
هذه الولادة الجديدة المنتظرة تأتي ثمرة المعاناة الطويلة، طبعاً، ولكن أيضاً وخصوصاً ثمرة الانقلابات التي أحدثها الزلزال في العقول والنفوس. وهذه القصة هي نموذج عن هذه الولادة أو عن هذه الانقلابات وصورة عنها يكتبها مسيحي ماروني كتائبي عتيق أتيح له أن يعيش مأساة لبنان يوماً، وأن يشارك في العديد من فصولها، وأن يكون فيم واقع القرار أحياناً وإن على مستوى متواضع، فأتيح له، لذلك الوقوف على الكثير من الحقائق، والتأمل فيها واستخلاص العبر والنتائج منها حتى الوصول إلى التغيير الكامل في النظرة إلى بعض جوانب المصير اللبناني وبعض مكوناته الأساسية.
