تناول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب حياة الملك معاوية بن أبي سفيان من حيث مولده مروراً بنسبة وإسلامه وفتنة مقتل الإمام عثمان بن عفان رضي الله عنه، وما تبعها من فتن عظيمة من إختلاف بين الصحابة رضوان الله عليهم أجمعين - وحربين ذهب ضحيتهما الكثير من الدماء الزكيّة من الجانبين في حربي الجمل وصفين، وما تلا صفين في تحكيم...، ثم قتل الخوارج للإمام علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه ودور عبد الله بن سبأ في كل الأحداث التي رافقت الفتنة، ثم جاء عام الجماعة وخروج الخوارج على معاوية رضي الله عنه، وتناولنا حياة أهم ولائه زياد بن أبيه والمغيرة بن شعبة وتحدثنا عن أقواله وأولياته رضي الله عنه، ثم تحدثنا عن الفتوحات في عهده رضي الله عنه ودوره فيها والبيعة لابنه يزيد وآراء الفقهاء حول الإستخلاف وولاية العهد، وختمنا بوفاته رضي الله عنه.
