حفظت لنا كتب الأدب والتاريخ القديمة كثيراً من الأبيات والقصائد والمقطعات منسوبة إلى يزيد بن معاوية. والذين ألفوا في تاريخ الأدب العربي في العصر الأموي، كجرجي زيدان، وأحمد حسن الزيات، ومحمود مصطفى، والدكتور شوقي ضيف، والدكتور عمر فروخ، والمستشرق الأستاذ بلاشير، غاب عنهم ذكر يزيد في شعراء الأمويين، ولعل سبب ذلك هو عدم وجود شعره مجموعاً على أن الدكتور جبرائيل جبور كان كاتب دراسة عن "يزيد بن معاوية الملك الشاعر" نقل فيها بعض ما نسب إليه من شعر.
ولهدف أدبي محض رأينا أن نقوم بمحاولة جديدة لجمع شهر يزيد، الذي كان أول شعراء الخلفاء الأمويين. فاستخرجنا من المصادر القديمة، على اختلافها، ما وجدناه من شعره وجعلناه على قسمين. الأول ما ترجح عندنا أو عند الأقدمين، أنه له. والثاني: ما بدا واضحاً حسب الموازين والأساليب الشعرية المتفق عليه، أنه منسوب إليه. وفي هذا القسم ألحقنا المقطعات التي نشرها شوارتس، مع نقد الأب لا مانس لها، كما بينا رأينا في عدم صحة نسبة هذه الأشعار له.
وقد بينا اختلاف الروايات في الهامش، في القسم الأول، وحرصنا على ذكر المناسبة التي قيل الشعر فيها، فذلك أدعى إلى فهمه، وقبوله أو الشك فيه.
