"معاوية بن أبي سفيان، علم بارز في تاريخ العرب والمسلمين قاطبة، وقد اشتهر بالدهاء والحنكة السياسية، كما كانت له لفتات واضحة في الخطابة والأدب، وهذا يبرز قول البعض بأن لمعاوية ديوان شعري ينسب إليه. والكتاب الذي بين يدينا يحاول رصد هذه الأشعار، جامعاً مادتها من مصادر متنوعة، تاريخية وأدبية ولغوية، ومعيداً توزيعها على صفحاته، حيث تم ترتيبها وفق تسلسل الحروف الهجائية للقوافي ترتيباً ألفبائياً، مع إثبات مناسبة كل قصة وقصيدة، في الحواشي، هذا إلى جانب شرح لألفاظ الأبيات ومعانيها بيتاً بيتاً. إلى جانب هذا تم الاهتمام بتخريج القطع والقصائد حيث ذكر من التخريج المصدر الأصل لكل قطعة وقصيدة، ثم المصادر الأخرى إن وجدت مع الإشارة إلى ما ورد في كل منها، وأبتع ذلك بذكر اختلاف الروايات إن وجدت.
