تعددت الموضوعات المعرفية التي اشتغل بها المعتزلة, كعلم الكلام وعلم أصول الفقه وعلوم اللسان وعلوم التفسير والتأويل. وهذا الكتاب يقدم دراسة منهجية علمية وجديدة لاستراتيجية التأويل الدلالي لكل ذلك. فمن مفهوم الدلالة وطبيعته السيميائية, وبالنظر النقدي في الدراسات التي سبقته, يتقدم هذا الكتاب إلى تصور المعتزلة للعقل واللغة, متقرياً المنصوص العقلي والمعقول النصي, ولغة العقل وعقل اللغة, والعقل بين الاتصال والانفصال, ليبلور مبادئ النظام العقلي عند المعتزلة. وبالنظر في آليات التأويل كدلالة للخطاب, وفي المواضعة والتأويل والإحالة اللغوية والتعدد الدلالي, وفي أجناس المعنى والمقاصد الغائبة والدلالات الحاضرة, بكل ذلك يبلور الكتاب مفهوم التأويل في الفكر الاعتزالي, ثم يتوج ما تقدم بدرس الدلالات العقلية واللغوية والنحوية والمجازية عند المعتزلة, ملتزماً دوماً بالبنية التركيبية.
