الدلالة هي المعنى لا الألفاظ، وقد تبلور هذا المصطلح عند المنطقيين والفلاسفة، فعرفوها بأنها "كون الشيء بحالة يلزم من العلم به العلم بشيء آخر، والشيء الأول، هو الدال والثاني هو المدلول". وقد عرف المفسرون أهمية البحث الدلالي، الذي يتيح بفتح آفاقاً رحبة أمام الدراسات القرآنية البلاغية، حيث بلغ هذا البحث منتهاه وغايته في كتاب (الميزان في تفسير القرآن) للعلامة السيد محمد حسين الطباطبائي، والذي تميز عما عداه بسعة الأفق والإحاطة الجادة.
وفي إطار بحثه في منهج المفسر وجد مؤلف هذا الكتاب، أن تفسير الميزان يفتح المجال واسعاً أمام دراسة جانب آخر منه هو الجانب الدلالي، أراد من ذلك أن يعرف بإمام من أئمة التفكير الإسلامي في هذا العصر معتمداً في ذلك منهج بحث مستنبط من مادة التفسير التي تقع في عشرين مجلداً.
يقع الكتاب في مدخل تمهيدي وأربعة فصول، المدخل ضم جانبين، أولاً التعريف بصاحب الميزان، للتفسير بشكل عام أما الجانب الثاني فقد تناول مفهوم البحث الدلالي. أما الفصل الأول فقد تناول مصادر الميزان الدلالية، وقد صنف موارد التفسير ذاكراً معظم الكتب التي يقف عليها. وفي الفصل الثاني عرض لموضوع الدلالة السياقية في تفسير الميزان، فتحدث عن النظم والسياق، التفسير والتطبيق، وأسباب النزول والسياق والجري والانطباق، وعموم اللفظ وخصوص السبب، والتناسب الدلالي، وبحث الفصل الثالث للدلالة التركيبة في تفسير الميزان كما تناول الفصل الرابع التطور الدلالي واستنباط المعنى في تفسير الميزان وختم دراسته بخاتمة عرض فيها لأهم ما توصلت إليه الدراسة.
