إن المهمة الرئيسة في هذه الدراسة تتعلّق بعملية كشف للتصوُّرات الكلِّية عن أسس التفكير الدلالي عند المعتزلة، وهي الأسس التي تقود إلى وضع الافتراضات أو المُسَلَّمات الكبرى في التفكير الدلالي الاعتزالي موضعها من نظريتهم العامة التي ربط المعتزلة بسببها أنفسهم في الإجابة عن مسألة كبرى كانت قد أُثيرت عبر تاريخهم الفكري تمثّلت في قضية خلق القرآن. نتج عن ذلك فيما بعد حكم أكد أن النص القرآني الكريم هو نفسه المسموع والملفوظ المتحقّق في الكلام الإنساني. وفي ضوء هذا التفكير فإن المنظومة المعرفية الاعتزالية تتفق على كليات هي في حقيقة أمرها مقودة قسراً إلى تفكير عقيدي استند إلى أصولهم الخمسة. فوضعوا لهذا نظرية القصد التي تعد واحدة من أهم الافتراضات الكبرى التي نظرت إلى النص القرآني بوصفه نصاً ثابتاً إذا ما أضيف إلى الواحد الأحد. في حين نظروا إلى المعنى من نافذة الكلام وهو أمر يحيلنا إلى أن تصورات فيلسوف معاصر مثل ريكور عن كون الكلام هو المنطلق لدراسة المعنى قد تمثل تعبيراً مناسباً لبيان ذلك عند المعتزلة، إذ يذهب ريكور إلى أن المنطلق لدراسة المعنى ليس اللغة بوصفها نظاماً ثابتاً، على نحو ما يفعل البنيويون، بل الكلام بوصفة حدثاً لغوياً عارضاً.
هذا يعني أن دراسة المعنى لا تقوم على علاقة ثنائية اللفظ - المعنى التي تصور اللفظ والمعنى في لحظة جمود وسكون، بل تعنى بدراسة تجاور تلك الألفاظ - المعاني في نظم عارض حادث لا يمكن أنْ يفهم إلا في ظل كينونة النّظَم القائمة على التجاور والتسليم بالتحول الدلالي وقصد المتكلم.
