يَسعى هذا الكتاب إلى توصيل بعض المعلومات عن المبادئ النفسيّة العامّة، وبعض المهارات لتطبيق تلك المعلومات على الأوضاع الاجتماعيّة والتنظيميّة. وإذا كان العلم يحاول إلقاء الضوء على الواقع الملموس من خلال الكشف عن القوانين والمبادئ العامّة التي تجعل الواقع على ما هو عليه. فإنّ التعميم يُعطي معنى للمثيل الملموس، ولكن المثيل يحمل التعميم للعالم الحقيقي، ويجعله قابلاً للاستخدام. وتجربة الأوضاع الاجتماعيّة وتحليل تلك التجارب يجعل التعميم والواقع الملموس أمراً فعّالاً.
و الغرض من التدريب ليس مجرّد الزيادة في فهم المبادئ، أو فهم الحالات الملموسة (المحددة) من حيث المبادئ. فهو يمكن أن يكون مفيداً أيضاً كوسيلة لتطوير المهارات للمواقف الجماعيّة: مهارات الرصد، ومهارات البصيرة الذاتيّة ومهارات فهم السلوكيات ودوافع الآخرين، ومهارات تكييف السلوك للمتطلبات المهمّة واحتياجات القئات والأشخاص.
