يقدّم الكتاب أول دراسة منهجيّة عن تاريخ لبنان الاقتصادي الحديث من خلال تقييم أدائه في مجاليّ النمو والإنماء منذ فترة ما بعد الاستقلال. ويقيّم الكتاب أيضاً فعاليّة الاستراتيجيّة الليبراليّة السائدة للإنماء المتمثلة عمليّاً بمؤسسات Washington Consensus البنك الدولي وصندوق النقد الدولي، وسياسيّاً بما يُسمّى "توافق واشنطن" حول ضرورة تطبيق الليبراليّة الاقتصاديّة في كل البلدان.
يقوم الفصل الأوّل بمراجعة نقديّة لأسس الليبراليّة الاقتصاديّة، وللنظريات المناهضة لها، وذلك في مجال تحديد استراتيجيّة النمو والإنماء. ويرجع الفصل الثاني إلى الجذور التاريخيّة لنشوء الرأسماليّة في لبنان القرن التاسع عشر، ومن ثمّ إلى إرساء دعائم الليبراليّة الاقتصاديّة منذ أوائل الاربعينات من القرن العشرين. ويبدأ الفصل الثالث بالتقييم التفصيلي لمسار النمو والإنماء لفترة 1948-1974، التي يُنظر إليها عادة كالعصر الذهبي للاقتصاد اللبناني، ثمّ تُدرس فترة الحرب 1975-1990، وما بعدها بما في ذلك ما يُسمّى "إعادة الإعمار" الذي تبعته سريعاً أزمة اقتصاديّة لا تزال قائمة حتّى الساعة.
يتناول الفصل الرابع الصناعة. ويقدّم الفصل الخامس نظرة جامعة ومفصّلة عن ديناميّة النظام الاقتصادي اللبناني من خلال دراسة تطوّر الناتج وتوزيعه، وتفاعل القطاعات الرئيسية في ما بينها. ويركّز الفصل السادس على الأداء االاقتصادي بعد الحرب، وذلك بعد تقييم هيكليّة القطاع المصرفي وأدائه. ويحلل هذا الفصل تحليلاً مفصّلاً انهيار الليرة في منتصف الثمانينات، وأسبابه، وآلياته بما فيها ظاهرة حسابات ال"يورو-ليرة".
و تشكّل الجداول في ملاحق الكتاب حصيلة إعادة تكوين منهجيّة للقاعدة الإحصائيّة حول المؤشرات الرئيسيّة للاقتصاد اللّبناني (1948-2002). وهي تشمل، معزّزة بشروحات عن المصادر والمنهجيات المتبعة، سلسلات إحصائيّة عن: السكّان، العمالة، مستويات التعليم، الحسابات القوميّة المفصّلة، الصناعة، مؤشرات الأسعار...ولا ريب أن القاعدة الإحصائيّة، والدراسة نفسها، ستعيدان تنظيم الذاكرة الإقتصاديّة عن لبنان.
