يرصد هذا الكتاب عملية تسييس الطائفة الشيعية ودخولها معترك الحياة السياسية اللبنانية، سواء في صراعاتها الداخلية مع الإقطاع السياسي، أم في علاقاتها مع الطوائف الأخرى وسائر القوى الإقليمية والدولية وبروز حركة أمل في وسط المخاض، عارضاً نشأتها ودور مؤسسها الإمام موسى الصدر، ومتابعاً مراحل نموها، والمخاطر التي تحدق بها وبممثلي خطها المعتدل وآفاق تطورها. شارحاً الأسباب التي مكنت "أمل" من لعب مثل هذا الدور الهام في الحياة السياسية في لبنان. وهو بعمله هذا إنما يعالج مسائل سياسية راهنة، تمتاز بأهميتها لدى صانعي السياسة في كل مكان، وهو نموذج عن الدراسة الأكاديمية الموثقة والتي تستند إلى المقابلات الشخصية ومعايشة الوضع ميدانياً، استنادها إلى المراجع والمصادر ونظريات علم الاجتماع وعلم السياسة الحديثين، وهو إذ يؤسس على كافة الدراسات والمقالات الغربية، والمحلية التي كتبت حول الوضع في لبنان، فإنه لا يكتفي بمجرد الاستشهاد بها، بل يعرضها في إطار نقدي مبيناً أوجه تصورها من استيعاب حقائق الوضع اللبناني. والكتاب بهذا المعنى دراسة نقدية للعديد من المؤلفات التي تعاطت مع الظاهرة الطائفية في لبنان.
