التخييل إنفعال ذهني لا واع تستجيب به النفس لمقتضى الصور الفنية، فتقوم في طلب موضوعها أو تنفر منه وتتفاداه، ومن ثمة، فهو تتاج تفاعل جمالي بين الشاعر والمتلقي يتمخض عنه وعي جديد بالعالم والأشياء مغاير في الطبيعة الإدراكية للوعيين الحسي والعقلي، فحين ترتسم في ذهن الشاعر رؤى خيالية ذات إيحاءات جمالية مؤثرة، ويكتمل وعيه الإبداعي بها، يشكلها بالأسلوب الشعري المناسب لها، فيبثها في الناس لتثير في نفوسهم وخيالاتهم الإنفعالات والرؤى الفنية ذاتها التي عاشها في تجربته التخيُّلية.
ومن البين أن الحديث عن التخييل هو من صميم النظر في الجانب الباطني للنفس الإنسانية، ويتصل برصد الحركات الذهنية لقوى الإدراك النفسي عامة، والخيالي خاصة، ويروم تحديد خصائصها ووظائفها وعلاقاتها.
وتأتي "حفريات" مولاي يوسف الإدريسي بحثاً عن مفهوم التخييل الشعري، خلال لحظة التأسيس تلك، حين شرعت المصطلحات تنبثق وتتوالد وتتنامى وتتكاثر في حقول المعرفة عامة، وفي حقل الشعرية العربية خاصة.
ولذلك ينقسم هذا الكتاب إلى أربعة فصول: يتناول الفصل الأول منها مفهومي "الخيال والمحاكاة" لدى أفلاطون وأرسطو، ووقف الفصل الثاني عند النصوص الفلسفية العربية المبكرة التي تضمنت الإرهاصات الأولى الدالة على بداية تشكل مفهوم التخييل في السياق الفلسفي، وعالج الفصل الثالث الدراسات النفسية القديمة، أما الفصل الرابع فيبحث لكيفية توظيف الفارابي وابن سينا وابن رشد لمفهوم التخييل إنطلاقاً مما استفادوه من الترجمات العربية القديمة لكتب أرسطو: في النفس والشعر والخطابة.
