عتبات النص بنيات لغوية وأيقونية تتقدم المتون وتعقبها لتنتج خطابات واصفة لها تعرف بمضامينها وأشكالها وأجناسها، وتقنع القراء باقتنائها، ومن أبرز مشمولاتها: اسم المؤلف، والعنوان، والأيقونة، ودار النشر، والإهداء، والمقدمة وهي بحكم موقعها الاستهلالي – الموازي للنص والملازم لمتنه تحكمها بنيات ووظائف مغايرة له تركيبياً وأسلوبياً ومتفاعلة معه دلالياً وإيحائياً، فتلوح بمعناه دون أن تفصح عنه، وتظل مرتبطة به ارتباطاً وثيقاً على الرغم من التباعد الظاهري الذي قد يبدو بينهما أحياناً... ولما كانت الدراسة الراهنة تسعى إلى مقاربة عتبات النص من خلال متن روائي، فإنها ترى – لاعتبارات نظرية ومنهجية أيضاً - ضرورة الوقوف قبل ذلك عند التصورات القديمة والحديثة بهذا الخصوص، ولذلك تشجرت في الكتاب – وفقاً للمؤلف – إلى ثلاثة أقسام هي: يرصد القسم الأول وعي العرب قديماً بالعناصر النظرية المشكلة لعتبات النص، ويبحث من ثمة في المصادر الأدبية والنقدية عن درجة هذا الوعي ومستواه، ويتابع الشبكة الاصطلاحية التي وظفها العرب القدامى في معرض مقاربتهم لما يصطلح عليه في اللغات الواصفة بعتبات النص، وذلك لكشف المصطلح الذي يمكن اعتباره معادلاً للعتبات وفق الاصطلاح الحديث، كما يستعرض أبرز تصوراتهم ومواقفهم بخصوص الوظيفة الإيحائية والدلالية لاسم المؤلف والعنوان... وغيرها من العناصر التي تسبق متن الكتاب وتنتج خطاباً حوله يعرّف به ويقنع القارئ بأهميته. ويتابع القسم الثاني أبرز التصورات الحديثة التي اعتنت بتحديد مكونات عتبات النص وعناصرها، مركزاً في ذلك على كشف درجات الوعي ومستويات الاهتمام بها في الثقافة الغربية منذ اليونان إلى الكتابات الرائدة لجيرار جنيت وهنري ميتران وشارل غريفل وغيرهم. وقد حرص المؤلف في هذا القسم على إبراز التحولات البنيوية والأسلوبية التي مست العتبات، وتحديد أهم وظائفها الجمالية والدلالية. أما القسم الثالث فقد حاول ممارسة كل التصورات النظرية والمنهجية الواردة في القسمين السابقين في إضاءة عتبات رواية: الآن... هنا أو شرق المتوسط مرة أخرى لعبد الرحمن منيف، وخاصة: اسم المؤلف والعنوان والأيقونة والمقتبسات الدلالية والإيحائية، وأبرز وظائفها الجمالية والتداولية في علاقتها بمتن الرواية...
