خلال قيام بطل الرواية الطيار ومدرب الطيران "جيمي فوربس" بطلعة جوية، يسمع نداء استغاثة ماريا، زوجة زميل طيار آخر، التي تقول إن زوجها قد انهار على مقعد القيادة وهما في الجو، فيستجيب لها ويرشدها فوربس إلى الخطوات التي تُمكّنها من أن يحط بسلام على المدرج وعندما يحاورها مراسلو الصحافة لاحقاً حول شعورها خلال هذه المحنة، تخبرهم أن "فوربس" قام بتنويمها مغناطيسياً، تثير هذه العبارة سلسلة من الذكريات والتساؤلات في ذهن فوربس، وتدفعه الأحداث التالية إلى التبصّر في مكنون الحقيقة، والتأمل في ما وراء حدود عوالمنا الخاصة، وما إذا كانت هذه الحدود حقيقية أم من ابتداع خيالنا مما شكّل منعطفاً جذرياً في حياته. ومع أن الرواية تعالج الموضوع نفسه الذي عالجه كتاب السر، إلا أن الكاتب يأخذنا إلى أعماق أغنى وآفاق أرحب، مثيراً أسئلة مستفزة تهز أمواج بحر الاستكانة الذي يحيط بنا".
