يعتبر المقدس من أعظم جغرافيي القرن الثالث الهجري، وهذا الإخراج للكتاب يريد إعادة الاعتبار للمقدسي من خلال تقديمه إلى القراء بصفته رحالة من الطراز الرفيع، وليس جغرافيا وحسب. فعمله يحتوي على وصف دقيق لمشاهداته العيانية خلال رحلاته التي دامت حوالي العشرين عاماً في مشرق العالم الإسلامي ومغربه. وفيه نقف على نزعة سردية حكائية تبرز بجلاء عبر مرويات هذه الرحلة.
مع "أحسن التقاسيم في معرفة الأقاليم" نحن إزاء عمل أشبه ما يكون بنتائج الباحث الإثنوغرافي المعاصر. فالمقدسي يمزج بجلاء ما بين الرحلة والإثنوغرافيا التي تسعى إلى تقديم توصيف موضوعي للشعوب وعاداتها وألسنتها ونظمها العائلية والأخلاقية والدينية وتقاليدها الاجتماعية وطرق لباسها وأسباب عيشها الاقتصادية وخياراتها الغذائية والسكنية لا يحيد المقدسي قيد أنملة عن عمل الأنثروبولوجي والإثنوغرافي كما حدد في علوم الاجتماع المعاصر، وهو ما يجعله بامتياز أهم جغرافيي عصره.
