يعتبر كتاب "أحسن التقاسيم في معرفة الأقاليم" ذروة الكتابات التي وضعت حول وصف البلدان في القرن الرابع الهجري، حيث ظهرت كتب المسالك والممالك التي اهتمت بوصف دار الإسلام وطُبعت بطابع إسلامي محض، بحيث جعل أصحابها مادتهم الأساسية البلاد الإسلامية وركزوا على التصورات الجغرافية التي من قبيل ما ورد في القرآن أو تلك التصورات القائمة على الأحاديث وأقوال الصحابة.
وفي هذا السياق يأتي كتاب المقدسي (ولد عام 947م وتوفي عام 990م) ولكنه يمتاز باتباعه منهجاً علمياً يعتمد فيه التدقيق المبني على المشاهدة والمعرفة المباشرة والتحري عن الأمور بمراجعة أولي الألباب وذوي العقول من الناس مسيداً حديثه بقوله "أعلم أني أسست هذا الكتاب على قواعد محكمة وأسندته بدعائم قوية وتحريث جهد الصواب، واستعنت بفهم أولي الألباب وسألت الله عز إسمه أن يجنبني الخطأ والزلل.. فأعلى قواعده وأرصف بنيانه ما شاهدته وعقلته، وعرته وعلّقته. وعليه رفعت البنيان وعملت الدعائم والأركان، ومن قواعده أيضاً وأركانه. وما استعنت به على تبيانه سؤال ذوي العقول من الناس. ومن لم أعرفهم بالغفلة والالتباس. عن الكور والأعمال في الأطراف التي بعدت عنها، ولم يتقدر في الوصول إليها. فما وقع عليه اتفاقهم أثبته، وما اختلفوا فيه نبذته. وما لك يكن لي بد من الوصول إليه والوقوف عليه قصدته وما لم يقر من قلبي ولم يقبله عقلي اسندته إلى الذي ذكره أو قلت زعموا وشحنته بفصول وجدتها في خزائن الملوك".
ما يميز كتاب المقدسي أيضاً بحسب دارسوه أنه أهتم بالبحث عن العقائد المختلفة (الملل والنحل) والمدارس الفقهية المتعددة في دار الإسلام وعلاقة الإنسان المسلم بالسلطة، وحركة البيع والخراج ودراسة المناخ والعادات والتقاليد والطبائع وغيرها، هذا فضلاً عن طريقة المقدسي في مزج الجد بالهزل واستخدام النقاش والمناظرة واستعمال السجع والشعر.
