يضم الكتاب كنز من كنوز التراث العربي وهو "أحسن التقاسيم في معرفة الأقاليم" لمؤلفه محمد بن أحمد المقدسي (335-390هـ). ويمثل مرجعاً جغرافياً وفي أحيان أخرى تاريخياً للأقاليم الإسلامية في عهد المؤلف. وقد تم اختيار بعض نصوصه حيث تم التعليق عليها، فيطل القارئ بذلك على الكتاب من نافذتين: نافذة تفتح على القرن الرابع الهجري عصر المؤلف، يقف من خلالها القارئ على وجهى العصر السياسي والحضاري، ونافذة تشرف بالقارئ على المقدسي نفسه، فيعايشه ويتعرف على شخصيته مسلكاً وخلقاً وملكات، ويدرس منهاجه في التأليف، وقد تخلل نص المقدسي قطوفاً من كتب قديمة وحديثة لعرب وأجانب، تم اختيارها من قبل المحقق، حيث أشار في ذيول الصفحات إلى المناهل التي منها نهل، وإلى المعجمات التي بها استعان، مذيلاً أسماء الرجال بتراجم موجزة.
