يمثل شعر الزهاوي ظاهرة حضارية معينة جديرة بالدراسة وذلك لأن الزهاوي يعد أول شاعر فيلسوف على المستوى العربي عرفه العالم العربي في عصر النهضة الحديثة.
فالعلم والفلسفة يلتقيان مع الشعر لقاء عطاء وتفاعل في كل عصور النهضات وينفصلان عنه في عصور الجمود والكبوات، وهكذا كان، وكان شعر الزهاوي خير ممثل لهذه الظاهرة الحضارية الجديرة بالإلتفات والتأمل.
من هنا كان دافع المؤلف أن يتناول شعر الزهاوي بالدراسة ويبعث بديوانه المفقود "نزعات الشيطان".
لكن دراسة شعره لا يمكن أن تستقيم ما لم نلم بحياته وآثاره وآرائه في الشعر والشعراء وهي أمور تلقي أضواء كاشفة على شعره، ومن أجل ذلك أفرد المؤلف لكل منها فصلاً مستقلاً.
