دوافع عدة دفعتني إلى كتابة هذا البحث، ولعل من هذه الدوافع أن شعر الزهاوي يمثل في نظري ظاهرة حضارية معينة جديرة بالدراسة حرية بالوقوف عندها طويلاً، ففي الجاهلية وصدر الاسلام كان هناك انفصال بين العلم والفلسفة وبين الشعر ولذلك ظل الشعر فقيراً في أفكاره، وعندما بلغ العرب قمة انطلاقتهم الحضارية في العصر العباسي تم لقاء بين العلم والفلسفة وبين الشعر، فكانت أشعار أبي تمام والمعري والمتنبي الفلسفية.
وفي الفترة المظلمة وحتى قبيل النهضة الحديثة عندنا، كان الانفصال تاماً بين العلم العصري والفلسفة وبين الشعر، فكان الأخير ضحل الفكرة فقير المعنى، فالعلم والفلسفة يلتقيان مع الشعر لقاء عطاء وتفاعل في كل عصور النهضات وينفصلان عنه في عصور الجمود والكبوات، وهكذا كان، وكان شعر الزهاوي خير ممثل لهذه الظاهرة الحضارية، والأصل في هذا الكتاب أنه دراسة لشعر الزهاوي وبعث لديوانه المفقود، لكن دراسة شعره لا يكن أن تستقيم كالم نلم بحياته وآثاره وآراءه في الشعر والشعراء وهي أمور تلقي أضواء كاشفة على شعره، ومن أجل ذلك أفردت لكل منها فصلاً مستقلاً، كذلك أثبت في ملاحق الكتاب نص مقاله وجهها الزهاوي إلى الدكتورين محمد حسين هيكل وطه حسين ناقشهما فيها بعض آرائهما في الشعر والنثر.
وإذا كانت دراسة شعر الشاعر لا تستقيم بدون الإلمام بحياته وآثاره وآراءه في الشعر والشعراء فإنها أيضاً لا تتم ما لم نعرف آراء الآخرين من مستشرقين وعرب في شعر شاعرنا، لذلك أفردت فصلين هما: الزهاوي في نظر المستشرقين، الزهاوي في آثار الدارسين، ولأني كنت أشعر - كعراقيين - مدينون لأبي العلاء كثيراً، لقد احبنا حباً، فقال في بغداد مالم يقله غيره، فكتبت في فصل - شعر الزهاوي - فقرة مطولة عن - الزهاوي والمعري - ولعلني في هذه الفترة - على ما يعتورها من نقص - أول من أجرى مقارنة وموازنة بين فلسفة الشاعرين الكثيرين، الزهاوي والمعري، وقد اعتمدت في تعرف آراء المعري الفلسفية (اللزوميات) وشرحها و (تجديد ذكرى أبي العلاء) اعتماداً كبيراً، والكتاب الأخير في نظري من أحسن ما كتب في شعر المعري الفلسفي، كما اعتمدت في موازنتي بين (الزهاوي والمعري) منهج الدكتور طه حسين في كتابه سالف الذكر مع بعض التعديل.
