هنري الرابع لشكسبير مسرحية تؤسس لنهاية الدولة الدينية في أوروبا وبداية الدولة الزمنية فمنذ أن اغتال هنري الرابع ريتشارد الثاني من القرن الخامس عشر انتهى نظرياً وعملياً للحق الإلهي المقدس في الحكم الذي يدعيه ملوك أوروبا جميعاً وصار الدفاع عن التاج والعرش مسألة دنيوية بحتة تحددها قوة المطالب بالعرش وقدرته على الدفاع شخصياً عن تاجه الموروث فهذا ما يقوله شكسبير تحديداً على لسان هنري الخامس لدى وداع أبيه فغتصب العرش البريطاني على فراش احتضاره.
إن مسرحية هنري الرابع بجزئيها إن شئت أن تلخص مضمونها في كلمتين أو ثلاث تحكي عن تأهيل الوارث للحكم في (برنس هال) الذي سيصبح هنري الخامس بعد وفاة أبيه كان مثالاً يحتذي في الفساد السياسي والمالي الذي يمارسه أبناء وأقارب الحكام في كل زمان ومكان لأنه كما يقول المؤرخون الذين اعتمد عليهم شكسبير في مادته التاريخية كان بالإضافة إلى عدم صحوه من الخمر يضرب القضاة ويعترض طريق محصلي الضرائب ليسرق ما معهم قبل أن يصل إلى خزانة الدولة.
