هذا الكتاب أن تكتب دراسة أو مقالاً في التاريخ والحضارة أو الأدب واللّغة ليس بالأمر الهيّن، فقبل أن تخطّ بقلمك شيئاً ذا قيمة بنظرك، تعترضك أسئلة ثلاثة: ماذا أكتب؟ ولمن أوّجه كتابتي؟ وهل ما أكتب يلقى عناية القرّاء وإهتمامهم وقبولهم؟...
هذه الأسئلة من شأنها ان تثبّط عزيمة المتردّد، فما أن يمسك بالقلم حتّى يسرع بتنحيته جانباً، ناكصاً على عقبيه مكتفياً من الغنيمة بالمحاولة، ومن ناحية أخرى فإنّ تلك الأسئلة من شأنها أن تزيد عزيمة المصمّم المطّلع، الذي يرى حتماً عليه أن يسهم - ولو بالقليل المتواضع - في تاريخ أمّته وحضارتها وأدبها ولغتها، عسى أن يسدّ ثغرة، مهما كانت ضيّقة، في المكتبة العربيّة والإسلاميّة طالما انتظرها كثيرون.
إنّ هذا الكتاب، الذي بين يديك، يحتوي على ثلاثة وعشرين دراسة ومقالة، نشرت كلّها في الدوريّات المحليّة، يعود أقدمها إلى أواخر السبعينيّات من القرن الماضي وأحدثها إلى بداية القرن الحالي، تتفاوت طولاً وقصراً وجلّها في الأدب القديم، عدا مقالات ثلاث تناولت مواضع من الأدب الحديث تردّدت في إثباتها، لأنّي لست من الباحثين في هذا الأدب، ولكنّي رضخت لمشورة أحد الأصدقاء.
