يتوجه هذا الكتاب لطلبة الجامعيين والمعلمين الممارسين الذين يدرسون أو يدرّسون الرياضيات الأساسية في الصفوف الإبتدائية (1-4) ليتعرّفوا المفاهيم الرياضية الأساسية ومهاراتها والتي تشكل قاعدة مشتركة لمختلف فروع المعرفة الرياضية وتطبيقاتها الحياتية.
وقد اشتمل الكتاب على عشرة فصول:
تناول الفصل الأول: طبيعة الرياضيات وأهميتها وبنيتها.
وتناول الفصل الثاني: المنطق وأساليب البرهان المختلفة بما فيها البرهان المباشر وغير المباشر وغيرها.
أما الفصل الثالث: فقد جاء عنوانه مفاهيم رياضية حديثة تضمنت لمجموعات والعمليات عليها، والعلاقات وأنواعها، وكذلك الإقترانات وأنواعها، بالإضافة إلى العمليات الثنائية وخواصها.
وتناول الفصل الرابع: الأنظمة العددية متضمنة النظام العددي الثنائي والخماسي والعشري.
أما الفصل الخامس: فقد تناول مجموعة الأعداد الكلية؛ والتي تناولت الصفر والأعداد الطبيعية والعمليات عليها؛ ومن ثم ناقش الفصل السادس مفاهيم ونظريات أساسية في نظرية الأعداد كتطبيق على مجموعة الأعداد الكلية.
وجاءت الفصول السابع والثامن والتاسع لتستكمل المجموعات العددية؛ فتناولت على الترتيب الأعداد الصحيحة والنسبية والحقيقية والعمليات على كل منها.
وفي النهاية جاء الفصل العاشر: متضمناً تطبيقات مختلفة على المجموعات العددية والعمليات عليها؛ مثل النسبة والتناسب، والتقدير والتقريب العددي.
