تمثّل التربية البيئية ركيزة أساسية من ركائز التربية العلمية، ومحوراً هاماً من محاور المناهج الدراسية في المراحل التعليمية كافة. لقد بدأ الاهتمام الدولي بمفهوم التربية البيئية منذ السبعينيات من القرن العشرين نتبيجة للممارسات الخاطئة للإنسان في التعامل مع البيئة، وإساءة استغلال مواردها؛ ما أدى إلى ظهور الكثير من القضايا والمشكلات البيئية ذات الطابع العالمي، التي شغلت بال العديد من المفكرين والعلماء ورجالات القانون، وحتى عامة الناس، ولقيت اهتماماً من معظم دول العالم بمؤسساتها الرسمية وغير الرسمية.
لقد جاء هذا الكتاب محاولة متواضعة لإلقاء الضوء على المفاهيم البيئية الأساسية، وأبرز القضايا والمشكلات المتعلقة بالبيئة، ودور مؤسسات المجتمع الرسمية وغير الرسمية في التربية البيئية، ومواجهة تلك القضايا والمشكلات. وعليه جاء هذا الكتاب في سبعة فصول؛ تناول الأول منها مفهوم البيئة لغةً واصطلاحاً، وعلم البيئة وأبعاده، ومفهوم النظام البيئي ومكوناته، والموارد البشرية وآليات استنزافها. وتناول الفصل الثاني مفهوم تلوث البيئة، ودرجاته، وأنواعه، ومصادره، وكيفية حماية البيئة منه.
أما الفصل الثالث، فقد تناول الحديق عن دور التربية في حماية البيئة، وتناول الفصل الرابع استراتيجيات تدريس المفاهيم البيئية وتقويم تعلمها. أمّا الفصل الخامس فقد تناول حماية البيئة من منظور إسلامي. وتناول الفصل السادس دور القانون في حماية البيئة، وأخيراً جاء الفصل السابع للحديث عن العلاقة بين البيئة والتنمية المستدامة.
