هذه الدراسة هي أطروحة دكتوراه تمّ إنجازها باللغة الإنجليزية ما بين عاميّ 1985- 1988 في جامعة إكستر University of Exeter في المملكة المتحدة، وهي تمثّل محاولة لرصد مسيرة وتطوّر أبرز التيارات الإسلاميّة السنيّة والشيعيّة على الساحة الكويتية في الفترة بين عاميّ 1950 و 1981م، والتي لعبت - ولا تزال - دوراً مؤثراً في حراكه الإجتماعي والسياسي والثقافي وذلك في حقبة تاريخيّة مثّلت إحدى أهم حقب تكوين المجتمع الكويتي، وإنتقاله من مجتمع بسيط في تركيبته الإجتماعية والفكرية والسياسية إلى مشروع مجتمع ودولة حديثة، تطوّرت عمليّة بنائها خلال العقود المنصرمة وفق متغيّرات هيكليّة، عزّزها النموّ الإقتصادي الكبير الذي شهدته بعد إكتشاف النفط، وما تلاه من تداعيات إجتماعية، أبرزها النموّ المتزايد للتعدد السكاني وتنوّع تركيبته وما أعقبه من تطوّر في هيكليّة الجهاز الإداري للدولة ومن ثم الهيكل السياسي وإنفتاحه الثقافي وتداعيات كل ذلك على مسيرة الفكر والتيّارات الإسلاميّة السنيّة والشيعيّة.
قسّم المؤلف أطروحته إلى حقبتين تاريخيتين، كانت الحقبة الأولى من عام 1950 وحتى 1963، والحقبة الثانية من عام 1963 وحتى 1981، تناول في كليهما بالترتيب المجتمع الكويتي ودراسته الإجتماعية والسياسية والديمغرافية، وكذلك الحركة الإسلاميّة السنيّة بكل روافدها ومؤسساتها وتأثيرها، وكذلك الحركة الإسلاميّة الشيعيّة بنظرة متوازنة استحضرت البعد البحثي الأكاديمي والواقع العملي التطبيقي.
أهميّة هذا الكتاب لا تقتصر على تميّز هذه الأطروحة بجوانبها الأكاديميّة وإستيعابها الواقعي، وإنما يضاف لها شخصيّة مؤلّفها، التي جمعت بين التجربة العملية والدراسة الأكاديمية.
ويمثل هذا الكتاب الجزء الأول، وسوف يصدر الجزء الثاني عن حقبة 1980- 2017 قريباً ليعطّي مسيرة هذه التيارات.
