يتمحور هذا الكتاب حول مفهوم (الفلسفة) بشكل عام والفلسفة الإسلامية بشكل خاص، لذلك فإن العلوم الإسلامية كانت محور اهتمام الأستاذ الشهيد مرتضى المطهري الذي نقرأ له في هذا الكتاب مجموع محاضرات ودروس خصّ بها طلبة الحوزات الدينية خلال مسيرته الدعوية.
يحتوي الكتاب على عشرة دروس وفي آخر كل درس مجموعة من الأسئلة التي على أساس الإجابة عليها يدرك معلم الدروس الدينية مدى فهم الطالب لما ورد في الدرس. من هنا يقول المؤلف "ينبغي للطلاب الأعزاء أن يدركوا أن الثقافة الإسلامية تشكل ثقافة خاصة بين الثقافات العالمية، ولها روحها الخاصة بها (...) وما من ثقافة في العالم إلا استفادت من الثقافات والحضارات الأخرى، وإنما الكلام في كيفية الإستفادة والإنتفاع". أما عن "الفلسفة" فيقول: "أنها تطلق قديماً وحديثاً على معانٍ مختلفة، ولها بالنسبة إلى كلّ معنٍ تعريف مستقل ... وأن الفلسفة أطلقت قديماً على "مطلق العلوم العقلية" تارة، واقتصرت على واحد من شعبها تارة أخرى، وهو ما بعد الطبيعة أو "الفلسفة الأولى"، كما أطلقت هذه الكلمة حديثاً على معانٍ متعددة، ولكل واحد منها تعريفه الخاص". وهكذا انتظمت الدروس ضمن تلك المفاهيم والعناوين ومنها: الفلسفة الإشراقية والفلسفة المشائية، والحكمة المتعالية، والوجود والماهية، والعيني والذهني، والحدوث والقدم، والمتغير والثابت، والعلة والمعلول، وأخيراً الوجوب والإمكان والإمتناع.
