إن العرفان من العلوم التي وُلدت وترعرعت وتكاملت في مهد الثقافة الإسلامية، ويمكن دراسة العرفان والتحقيق فيه من الناحية الإجتماعية والثقافية.
وهناك فارق بين العرفاء وسائر الشرائح الثقافية الإسلامية الأخرى من المفسرين والمحدّثين والفقهاء والمتكلمين والفلاسفة والأدباء والشعراء: فإنّ العرفاء، مضافاً إلى كونهم طبقة مثقفة، أبدعت علماً اسمه (العرفان)، وظهر فيهم من العلماء الكبار الذين صنّفوا كتباً قيمة، وقد برزوا كفرقة إجتماعية في العالم الإسلامي لها سماتها التي ميَّزتها من غيرها، خلافاً للطبقات الثقافية الأخرى من قبيل: الفقهاء والحكماء وغيرهما من الطبقات الثقافية والعلمية التي لم تبرز كفِرَقٍ منفصلة عن غيرها.
ونحن في هذه الدروس لا نتعرف إلى العرفان من ناحيته الإجتماعية (التصوف) وكونه طريقة سلكتها فرقة إجتماعية، وإنما سنقصر البحث على الناحية الثقافية، وكون العرفان واحداً من العلوم الإسلامية.
