إن دراسة القيم ليست شيئاً جديداً في مجال المعرفة، فقد لقيت دراستها عناية كبيرة وإهتماماً عظيماً من لدن معظم رواد الفكر الفلسفي وأقطاب الدراسات الأخلاقية من القدماء والمعاصرين.
وقد عرف مفهوم القيم منذ عهد بعيد أيضاً، ولكن القدامى عبروا عنها بأسماء مختلفة مباشرة مثل الخير والخير الأسمى والكمال أو المثل الأعلى والغاية والمعيار والمنفعة.
ويعد البحث في القيم من الموضوعات الصعبة لما تنطوي عليها من مشكلات في قياسها وتصنيفها، وتزداد الصعوبات كلما كان أسلوب القياس متعلقاً بالجوانب الأساسية التي تحكم بناء الشخصية، لأنها القيمة من المفاهيم التي لا تلاحظ بوضوح في سلوك الأفراد؛ إذ أن جزءاً كبيراً منها يعبر عنه ضمنياً.
وللقيم أهميتها في حياة المجتمع فهي تمتد لتمس العلاقات الإنسانية وتعمل على تحديد طبيعة علاقات الناس بعضهم مع البعض الآخر وهي معايير وأهداف لا بد من وجودها في كل مجتمع.
والحكايات الشعبية هي نوع من السرد القصصي الذي يستمتع به الناس صغاراً وكباراً، تحتوي على قيم صريحة وضمنية تؤثر بشكل مباشر أو غير مباشر، في نمط تفكير الفرد وسلوكه ولا سيما عند الأطفال.
ولما كان محتوى القصص الشعبية وأحداثها وأبطالها يعكس الحياة الواقعية للمجتمع المحلي أو للجماعة التي تنتشر فيما بينها، ولما كان محتوى القصص الشعبية العربية ليس كمحتوى القصص الشعبية الكردية للأطفال، فإن تحليل القصص أو الحكايات الشعبية المطبوعة للأطفال، والتعرف على القيم المبثوثة فيها يعد أمراً مهماً وطنية ومسؤولية تاريخية وحاجة تربوية وضرورة علمية.
من هنا، يأتي هذا الكتاب بهدف الكشف عن (القيم السائدة) في الحكايات الشعبية للأطفال في العراق على أساس أنها وسيلة تربوية لتعميق الوحدة الوطنية والتماسك في المجتمع العراقي، ويتضمن الكتاب أربعة فصول، يتناول الفصل الأول تعريفاً بالموضوع، والفصل الثاني يعرض الدراسات السابقة في مجال القيم وأما الفصل الثالث فيصف إجراءات تحليل القيم في القصص الشعبية، ويتضمن الفصل الرابع نتائج تحليل القصص.
