لقد حاول العديد من المعماريين تفسير النتاج المعماري والعملية التصميمية نفسها على أساس إدراك العناصر البصرية دون الولوج إلى الأسس الفكرية والمفاهيم التي تأثر بها هذا النتاج أو التقنيات التي أدت إلى أن يتبع المصمم أسلوباً معيناً في إنتاجه.
كما أن معظم المهتمين بتاريخ العمارة لم يفسروا التاريخ على أساس تحليلي يرتكز على عزل العناصر المؤثرة في التصميم والعناصر المتأثرة فيه كالشكل العام أو التكوين الفضائي لأي مبنى أو سيادة طراز معين عبر فترة زمنية دون الأخرى.
وعليه، فإن الدراسة النتاج المعماري عبر الزمن لا بد أن يهتم بتشخيص العوامل التي أثرت في كل فترة زمنية من أجل إستنباط قواعد فكرية عامة وشاملة لنظرية التصميم المعماري، حيث أن العمارة المعاصرة وخاصة بعد فترة السبعينات عندما بدأ التركيز على البحث أدركت أن الفضاء المعماري يعني خلق نوعاً من العلاقات ما بين الوظيفة والمعاني الإجتماعية في المبنى حيث أن المنظومات التي تعمل بموجبها العمارة لصياغة الفضاء المعماري ORDERING OF SPACE لأي مبنى هو في الحقيقة وضع منظومة لصياغة سلوك الأفراد يؤثر ويتأثر بها حيث أن المبنى لا يُفسر كونه رمزاً معين يمكن إدراكه بصرياً بل أنها عبارة عن منظومة عضوية تربط أجزائها الواحدة بالأخرى وأن هذه المنظومة تتغير وتتبدل عبر الزمن وفقاً لتغير المنظومة الإجتماعية.
لقد احتوى الكتاب على عدة فصول: استعرض الفصل الأول منها عمارة عصر النهضة وأثرها في وضع القواعد للعمارة المعاصرة، ثم الفصل الثاني الذي بحث في تطور العمارة المعاصرة وفهم للقضاء حتى الفصل السادس والسابع حيث تم تفسير الأساس النظري وإستعراض بعض الآراء النظرية التي انتهت بأفكار عامة وإطار نظري تفسر تغير النتاج المعماري ثم بدأ يستعرض الكتاب أمثلة تطبيقه لتطور العمارة في مدينة بنغازي من خلال هذا الإطار النظري ثم استعرض أفكار تصميمية حديثة لفندق العقبة كي تدل على كيفية تحليل المتغيرات التصميمية وإمكانية الخروج بنتاج معماري متميز.
