لعل أول إشارة إلى عمران جبل عامل في الإسلام تعود إلى القرن الرابع للهجرة/العاشر للميلاد. إذ أشار إليه محمد بن أبي بكر البناء في كتابه "أحسن التقاسيم في معرفة الأقاليم". وتشير الدلائل المتوفرة إلى أن جبل عامل كان هو نفسه الجليل تبدل اسمه بعد أن نزلته قبيلة عاملة اليمانية وظل يحمل الاسم حتى النصف الأول من القرن السابع للهجرة. وهذا الجبل ما فتئ محط أنظار المصنفين الذين اهتموا بأعلامه وبالتعريف بهم وبمصنفاتهم. مما يعكس انطباعاً عاماً وقوياً عن الأهمية الخاصة لهذه البقعة في التاريخ الثقافي الذي ينتمي إليه أولئك المصنفون.
وفي هذا الكتاب يبحث المؤلف عن الظروف النفسية الاجتماعية التي جعلت جبل عامل دون غيره يتخذ طريقه نحو أن يصبح ظاهرة ثقافية بارزة، كما يبين الأسباب التي جعلته يتحول من بقعة خامدة بأكثر من معنى إلى ذي حضور ثقافي هائل جعل منه لمدة قرنين واحداً من أكثر المراكز العلمية حيوية وجاذبة في العالم الإسلامي.
كما يشرح المؤلف في بحث غير مسبوق عن الاسم والمسمى وفيه يتتبع تطور المسمى، أي جبل عامل والاسم (عاملي) خلال القرون وهو مدخل ضروري للبحث الذي حدد زمانه بالشهيدين محمد بن مكي الجزيني، الشهير بلقب الشهيد الأول (786هـ) وزين الدين علي الجباعي الشهير بلقب الشهيد الثاني (965هـ)، وبحياتهما وذلك لما بينهما وبين النهضة في جبل عامل من علاقة صحيحة.
