تدورُ فكرةُ الكتاب على العمل أو النشاط المكتوم الذي قاده بالتوالي عددٌ من الأئمة، إبتداءً من سادسهم، إبتغاءً بناءِ قاعدةٍ بشريّةٍ مُتحرّرةٍ من تأثير المشروع الإستلابي، بالمعنى السياسي والفكري، الذي قادته السُّلطات المُتوالية، راميةً إلى بناء مفهوم مُختلفٍ للإسلام، يتناسبُ مع مراميها في حُكم مُستتبٍّ، لا يعكّر صَفوَه إعتراضُ مُعترض ولا إنتفاضة خارج.
ومن المعلومِ أنّ عملَ الأئمةِ أو نشاطَهم منه ما هو علني، أي مبدئياً خارجَ موضوع الكتاب، وإن يكُن لا بُدّ من الوقوف عليه وُقوفاً ما لأنّه جزءٌ لا يتجزَأ من الحقيقة التاريخيّة التي نعملُ عليها، ومنه ما هو سرّي أو مكتوم هو ما نرمي إلى كشف ما تسعفُنا المصادرُ على بيانه.
على أنّ من الضروري جداً أن نقول: إن طورَي العمل هما وجهان لعُملةٍ واحدة، يتعاطيان ويكملُ أحدُهما الآخَر، وإنَ الفاصل بين الإثنين إنّما هو فاصلٌ تحليليٌّ لمصلحة البحث لا أكثر.
