اختصر النسفي تفسيره هذا الذي جاء في طيات هذا الكتاب، في تفسير البيضاوي ومن الكشاف للزمخشري، غير أنه ترك ما في الكشاف من الاعتزالات، وجرى فيه على مذهب أهل السنة والجماعة، وهو تفسير وسط بين الطول والقصر جمع فيه صاحبه بين وجوه الاعراب والقراءات، وضمنه ما اشتمل عليه الكشاف من الكتب البلاغية، والحسنات البديعية، والكشف عن المعاني الدقيقة الخفية، وأورد فيه ما أورده الزمخشري في تفسيره من الأسئلة والأجوبة ولكن ضمن شرحه للآيات، كما أنه لم يقع فيما وقع فيه صاحب الكشاف من ذكره للأحايث الموضوعة في فضائل السور.
ثم إن الإمام النسفي لم يخض في المسائل النحوية إلا بلطف، والتزم بالقراءات السبع المتواترة مع نسبة كل قراءة إلى قارئها، وعرض للمذاهب الفقهية باختصار عند تفسير آيات الأحكام، وكان يوجه الأقوال لكن دون توسع، وفي النهاية عرض النسفي لمذهبه الحنفي في كثير من الأحيان، ويرد على من خالفه، ويندر فيه ذكر الاسرائيليات، يتعقبها ثم يرفضها.
وقد أورد الإمام النسفي في أول تفسيره عبارة قصيرة، أوضح فيها فهمه وأسلوبه الذي اتبعه وسار عليه فقال: (كتاباً وسطاني التأويلات، جامعاً لوجوه الاعراب والقراءات، متضمناً لدقائق علمي البديع والإشارات، جالياً بأقاويل أهل السنة والجماعة، خالياً عن أباطيل أهل البدع والضلالة، ليس بالطويل الممل، ولا بالقصير المخل).
