بعد أن أنار الله عز وجل قلوب العرب بالإسلام، ووحد كلمتهم، و اتسعت بلادهم، واستقر معيشهم، وانضمت إليهم أعظم الحضارات، أخذ العرب بترجمة علوم الأمم السابقة ودراستها ونقدها وتصويبها، وقد شجع على ذلك رؤوس البلاد وولاة أمرها، مما أدى إلى نبوغ عدد غفير من العلماء في شتى المجالات فاقوا أقرانهم من علماء الحضارات الأخرى نبوغاً وتحصيلاً فأصبح العرب سادة عصرهم علماً وقوة ورفعة.
وقد ساهم في تقدم العلوم العربية علماء الأمصار من البلاد التي فتحها العرب واعتنق أهلها الإسلام، مثل فارس وبخارى وطبرستان، وأضافوا علومهم إلى العلوم العربية وكتبوا كافة مؤلفاتهم باللغة العربية لغة العلم في تلك العصور، وبقيت مخطوطات العرب العلمية محط أنظار العالم ودرست في الجامعات الأوروبية قروناً طويلة من الزمن.
ومع تعاقب الزمن وتقلب الظروف الأمنية في بلاد العرب، فقد الكثير من مخطوطات العلماء، ولا سيما ما تم إتلافه على يد التتار والمغول الهمجيين في بغداد، لكن اتساع الرقعة الجغرافية وانتشار العلم في كافة أرجاء البلاد العربية أنقذ العديد من العلوم العربية من الفناء، وبقيت الكثير من مخطوطات العلماء محفوظة من الضياع، وبقيت أسماء العلماء العرب خالدة في دور العلم نجوماً تتلألئ في سماء الحضارات الراقية.
