كنا شباباً غرباء وقفنا أمام باب سور بغداد مندهشين، متعجبين من عظمة بغداد، نحن الآتين من قرى أو من قصبات أشبه بقرى كبيرة، كنا نتخيل بغداد سيدة مبجلة نشتاق إلى أن تشرق على شفتيها ابتسامة رضا نحونا. ونرى بغداد قصراً ضخمة أو قلعة منيعة نتمنى أن يفتح لنا الحراس الباب ونجتاز الحديقة الغناء المحاطة بها ونتشرف بدخول القصر أو القلعة.
كنا غرباء أفرغتنا حقيبة كبيرة أمام حشد هائل وزحام كبير، لا نجيد اللغة تمام الإجادة. علينا أن نعيش ونتقرب من هذه المهرة الجامحة نحاول تسيسها والانسجام معها. علينا أن نجعل من هذه السيدة القاسية في مظهرها أماً أو أختاً. يجذبنا حبها شيئاً فشيئاً فنجذب إليها ونستريح في حضنها. ولا يمكن إنجاز هذا التقارب إلا عن طريق استهلاك الأحاسيس والعواطف وحرق الأعصاب. ومن ثم عن طريق ا لتفكير فيها وماضيها والتثقيف ومطالعة صفحات التاريخ. هكذا كان حالنا اتجاه المدينة العريقة. واليوم نحن نتصفح كتاب سيرة هذه المدينة، الذي ينشر أمام الناس بيدر الحوادث العجيبة لأكثر من ألف سنة ويعرض كل ما هو غريب ومثير، كل ما هو لطيف ومطعم ومسل. وهذه الحوادث ليست أساطير من حياة ملائمة بل هي وقائع عيش الكادحين، وقائع حياة متشابكة، متلاطمة الأمواج، حياة تمتاز بحانبها الكوميدي الساخر الناقد.
ومنذ القديم ومنذ تأسيس المدينة وازدهارها اجتمع فيها ممثلو أقوام وأقطار ومذاهب وديانات وفلسفات وثقافات. استضافتهم بغداد ومعهم ما يملكون من مواهب وفنون وأساليب وما يملكون من قابليات التكسب ومصارعة الجوع بأساليب وما يملكون من قابليات التكسب ومصارعة الجوع بأساليب المكر والغدر أو الحيلة أحياناً. وبأساليب التحدي والمجازفة والإيثار والمروءة أحياناً أخرى. كانوا غرباء جاؤوا ليعيشوا. فاختلطوا بحياة بغداد وانسجموا معها وأبدعوا أفعالاً طريفة ظريفة أو عجيبة غريبة!
وهكذا جمع الأستاذ أحمد الجزراوي الصحفي الأديب هذه الوقائع وألف منها هذا الكتاب اللطيف المتميز بأسلوبه الرشيق وسرده الشيق المتدفق كماء النبع. فلا يسع القارئ ترك الكتاب إلا ويخوض غمار مغامراته ويجد نفسه في معمعان أهواله ويتفرج على حوادثه الغريبة. أنه كتاب ملذ مشوق مفيد.
