تتعدَّد المدارس والمذاهب الفلسفيَّة بتعدد مراكز التحليل الفلسفيِّ وبؤر التحليل المعرفي، لذلك تُعَدُّ قضية المركز أو «اللوجوس» هي القضيَّة الأساسيَّة في دراسة التراث الفلسفي، إذ لا تنبني فلسفة دون مركز، وتُنْسب نشأةُ وبدايات هذا المذهب إلى الفيلسوف اليوناني «أبيقور»، الذي اعتبر أن اللذة هي غاية الحياة، وأن السّبيل الأمثل في تحقيق المعرفة لا يكون إلّا بالحواس.
ميزةُ هذا العمل أنه يقدّم دراسة لأحد المذاهب التي جعلت من اللذة والألم بؤرة التّحليل، ومركزًا تنطلق منه حياة الإنسان، تابع خلالها أصول هذه المدرسة الفلسفيّة وتطوُّرها عبر التاريخ، وقد انشغل «إسماعيل مظهر» بتأليف هذا الكتاب مدة أربع سنوات كاملة، بين بحث وتحقيق وتدقيق.
