عنوان هذا الكتاب (نقد أرسطو للفلسفة الطبيعية قبل سقراط) يعني التركيز على العملية النقدية التي يبرز من خلالها الجانب الطبيعي في فلسفة السابقين، وقد فرضت طبيعة هذا العنوان على المؤلف التطرق إلى آراء أرسطو في كل مسألة موضوع المناقشة، عندها أصبح الكتاب يسير على وفق عمليتي النقد والبناء، نقد السابقين وبناء هيكل فلسفة أرسطو.
ولكون العنوان شاملاً ومحدداً في نفس الوقت، فقد اختار المؤلف موضوعات النقد في ضوء موضوعات الفلسفة الطبيعية، فكان تقسيمه للكتاب على أربعة فصول بأربعة عشر مبحثاً، فضلاً عن الفقرات التي يتخللها كل مبحث من المباحث، هادفاً إلى تغطية كل جزء من أجزاء النقد، متوخياً الشمولية. وقد وجد لزاماً عليه قول شيء في منهج أرسطو النقدي، الذي كان مثار جدل بين الباحثين فضلاً عن تحديد تعريف دقيق للطبيعة وموضوعاتها، وهو موضوع الفصل الأول، أما الفصل الثاني فتناول فيه مبادئ الجسم الطبيعي، أي المبادئ التي ناقشها الفلاسفة قبل أرسطو، ومن ثم المبادئ الثلاثة عنده (الهيولي والصورة والعدم). بعد تحديد هذه الجوانب بالإمكان الدخول في تفصيلات (الحركة، والمكان، والزمان، والخلاء، واللامتناهي) التي هي مفاهيم طبيعية موضوعاً للفصل الثالث. واستكمالاً للجوانب الطبيعية ناقشت الكون والاستحالة، والفعل والانفعال، ونظرية العناصر في الفصل الرابع: لذا كان هذا الكتاب شاملاً لأغلب جوانب الفلسفة الطبيعية، ومحدداً لأنه يركز فقط على مناقشة نقد أرسطو لأراء الفلاسفة الطبيعيين قبل سقراط، مع ذكر توضيح للبديل الأرسطي لهذه الآراء.
