إن هدف هذه الدراسة الأساسي هو التعريف على ماهية الطبيعة البشرية ودوافع السلوك التي تحركها سعياً إلى توجيهها لبناء الإنسان وخير البشرية عن طريق التربية. والدراسة بالتالي هي محاولة للإجابة عن الأسئلة التالية: ما هي الطبيعة البشرية وتفسيراتها مع التأكيد على التراث الإسلامي ونظرة الإسلام من الإنسان؟ ما هي مكونات الطبيعة البشرية وما العوامل التي تكونها؟
تتألف الدراسة من حيث المحتوى والبنية من أربعة فصول هي على النحو التالي: الفصل الأول: يتناول الإنسان في الفكر الشرقي القديم، الفصل الثاني: ويتناول الإنسان في الفكر اليوناني، الإنسان في الفكر الروماني، الإنسان في الفكر المسيحي، آراء بعض مفكري الغرب في الإنسان، الفصل الثالث: ويتناول الإنسان في الفكر الإسلامي وآراء بعض الشخصيات الإسلامية في لبنان، الفصل الرابع: ويتناول خلاصة وخاتمة ووجهة نظر في الطبيعة البشرية ومكوناتها.
