إن النقد الأدبي يقوم أول ما يقوم على "النص لا على السياق" كما يستمسك فريق من النقاد، بيد أن شوقي يزحزك، لا بد، عن هذا المذهب الأدبي الخالص، ويدفعك دفعاً إلى قضايا العصر والحضارة، فهو من ذلك الطراز الذي تحس فيه بتيارات العصر أو حركة التاريخ، وهو شاخص، بعدُ، إلى الحضارة العربية الإسلامية، ومكانها الصحيح من هذا الصراع الحضاري برمته في القديم والحديث على السواء.
وتلك هي المزية الكبرى التي رصد لها الجيل الماضي حياته ومواهبه ازاء الغزو الحضاري الداهم، من لدن رفاعة إلى محمد عبده، فطه حسين والعقاد، وكان شوقي هو الوجه الأدبي لهذا الجهد المتصل أو الإحساس الجامع لهذا الجهد المتصل أو الإحساس الجامع لهؤلاء العظماء. فشوقي لا يقف في شعره موقف المنفعل إذا جاز هذا التعبير، يرصد لك وجدانه، ويقص عليك مشاعره، فيمضي بك سهلاً هيّناً، شأن (البحتري) في القديم و(حافظ) في الحديث، وإنما هو، فضلاً عن ذلك، نظرٌ "أو تأمل" في وقائع الحياة والأحياء، أشبه ما يكون بالمتنبي، وذوقٌ أو تأمل في اللغة والبيان يقربه من أبي تمام، وهذا النظر العقلي أو الذوق البياني كلاهما لا يعلو بالشعر إلاّ أن تعتمل بهما مشاعر الأديب، وكذلك كان شوقي يفكر بوجدانه، ويشعر بعقله، فإذا استقامت له هذه الخصال، فأنت منه على هذه العظمة التي بلغ بها إمارة الشعر، أما إذا لم تسعفه الموهبة، وطغى عليه العقل أو تكلف له البيان، سقط في المأثور من مثالب هذين الحكيمين، واستمرأ الهجوم عليه فريقٌ من النقاد والدارسين. ولقد حاول الدكتور حلمي علي مرزوق تفصيل ذلك كله في فصول هذه الكتاب. متوسعاً في قضية الخصومة بين شوقي ودعاة الرومانتيكية في مصر، ومفصلاً الاختلاف بين (الكلاسيكية) وبين (الرومانتيكية) أو (الرومانسية) في فلسفتيهما المتناقضتين في وظيفة الشعر ومنابعه في النفس البشرية.
