منذ اندلاع ثورات وسط أوروبّا وشرقها وانهيار الاتّحاد السوفياتيّ، دخل العالمُ في نظر العديد من المراقبين زمنَ الديموقراطيّة الليبراليّة. ولم يكن الشرق الأوسط بمنأى عن المدّ الديموقراطيّ هذا، إذ شهد محاولات غربيّة وتحديدًا تلك التي قامت بها إدارة الرئيس جورج بوش الابن في أعقاب أحداث 11 أيلول 2001، لنشر المبادئ الديموقراطيّة في بلدانه بل وأحيانًا فرضها بطرق شتّى. غير أنّ جهود الولايات المتّحدة وحلفائها انتهت إلى الفشل لأسباب متعدّدة. إلاّ أنّ الآمال الديموقراطيّة عادت ولاحت في أفق الشرق الأوسط إثر ما بات يُسمَّى بـــ"الربيع العربيّ" الذي بدأ في تونس في 18 كانون الأوّل 2010. ولكنّ "الربيع" هذا أدخل عدّة بلدان عربيّة في ما يُشبه "المختبر"، وبات من الصعب توقّع ما ستُفضي إليه مسار الأحداث.
يجمع هذا الكتاب مقالات صدرت منذ العام 1997 وحتّى العام 2014، تتناول من جوانب مختلفة موضع الدين إزاء الدولة ومخاض الديموقراطيّة في لبنان والشرق الأوسط، فضلاً عن ثمّة أحداث ومسائل دوليّة كان لها أثرها على المسار الديموقراطيّ في تلك المنطقة من العالم.
