أمالي المرتضى من الكتب النفسية والتصانيف الهامة التي تحتوي شتى أنواع المعارف والطرائف والفنون إضافة إلى حقائق السير والتاريخ والأخبار ونصوص الشعر واللغة. وقد أملاها الشريف المرتضى في مجالس عديدة وأزمات متعاقبة، فاختار مواضيعها بعناية وعمد إلى تأويل بعض آيات القرآن الكريم التي استغلق فهمها على العامة والخاصة وعالجها على طريقة المعتزلة محاولاً التوفيق بين تفسير هذه الآيات وما دار على ألسنة العرب من نصوص الشعر واللغة وبنفس المنهج الذي اتبعه في تأويل تلك الآيات عند إلى تأويل وتفسير الأحاديث الشريفة محتذياً منهج المعتزلة ومدلياً بحجتهم على من خالف تأويلهم من جماعة أهل السنة.
كما عالج مسائل علم الكلام وخاصة المسائل التي اشتجر فيها الخلاف بين المسلمين كالقول برؤية الله وخلق أفعال العبادة وإرادة الله للقبائح، والقول بوجوب الأصلح. وللكتاب نسخ عديدة قابلها المحقق ببعضها فاتخذ نسخة الإسكوريال أصلاً للعمل، و اثبت نصها، وأثبت جميع حواشي الأصل، وبعض حواشي النسخ الأخرى، ثم عمد إلى تخريج الآيات والأحاديث والقصائد. وختم الكتاب بفهارس عامة للآيات والأحاديث وفهرس للشعراء وقوافيهم وفهرس للأشعار إضافة إلى فهرس اللغة وقد اقتصر هذا الفهرس على الكلمات التي شرحها المؤلف.
