إن كتاب "الأمالى" هو من أمهات كتب الأدب العربى المعدودة، طالما نجد من آمة اللغة والأدب ينظمون فى كتبهم من درره، ويغترفون من بحره، وهو تأليف جزيل الفائدة، جم النفع، لمن يريد التعمق فى علم اللغة، وتزيين عقلة بالآداب العربية، والأخبار المنتخبة، والأشعار المختارة، والأمثال المستجادة، والحكم البالغة.
قال أبو على فى مقدمة هذا الكتاب: (لما رأيت العلم أنفس بضاعة، أيقنت أن طلبه أفضل تجارة، فاغتربت للرواية، لزمت العلماء للدراية، ثم أعلمت نفسى فى جمعه، وشغلت ذهنى بحفظه، حتى حويت خطيرة، وأحرزت رفيعه، ورويت جليله، وعرفت دقيقة، وعقلت شاردة، ورويت نادرة، وعلمت غامضه، ووعيت واضحه، فأمللت هذا الكتاب من حفظى فى الأخمسة بقرطبة، وفى المسجد الجامع بالزهراء المباركة، وأودعته فنونا من الأخبار، وضروبا من الاشعار، وأنواعا من الأمثال، وغرائب من اللغات، على أنى لم أذكر فيه بابا من اللغة إلا أشيعته، ولا ضرباً من الشعر إلا أخترته، ولا فنا من الخبر إلا انتخلته، ولا نوعا من المعانى والمثل إلا استجدته... الخ)، وفى هذا النزر من وصف الكتاب كفاية، لتعلم كم يجمل بالمتأدبين مطالعته، ويجدر بالمتعلمين مدارسته، وقد طبع هذا المؤلف الجليل لأول مرة بمصر سنة 1322هـ بمطبعة بولاق الأميرية.
