في هذا الكتاب يتناول السيد إبراهيم يوسف مرتضى مفهوم العقيدة في الدين الإسلامي ويبحث في كل ما يتصل بهذا المفهوم من مفردات لها دلالات روحية ومعنوية ومادية في حياة الفرد في المجتمع؛ ومنها المعاهدة، الميثاق، العهود، العقود، والإعتقاد، وعلى هذا فمعنى لفظ (العقيدة) هو الإلزام بعهد أو ميثاق بين طرفين.
وبناءً عليه يقول المؤلف في (المقدمة) التي يفتتح بها الكتاب: "بما أن فهم كل التعاليم والمفاهيم (في حقلي الدين والدنيا والتصديق بها أو عدمه من حيث صحتها أو بطلانها) هو من شؤون القلب والعقل الباطن أو ما نسميه بالجوانح وهو موضع السرائر والخفايا والنوايا ومجمعها ولا يصح أن تكون من شؤون غيره؛ فإن القناعة بصدق ذلك هو ما نسميه عقيدة أو إعتقاداً؛ ولذا فإنه لا مانع عندي من تعريف العقيدة لغة ولفظاً بالتعريف التالي - العقيدة لغة هي - إنضمام القلب على معنى وإلتزامه بما يقتضي القناعة به أو بعدمه.
وهذا التعريف عام يشمل جميع المعتقدات أما الخاص وما أخبر به الوحي عن الله سبحانه وما جاء به الأنبياء من الشرائع والتعاليم، هكذا نقول - والكلام للمؤلف - هو إنضمام القلب وتصديقه بما ثبت مجيء الوحي به وما جاء به الرسل عن الله عزّ وجلّ من التعاليم والشرائع وغير ذلك بالبرهان والدليل".
وبناءً على ما تقدم توزعت موضوعات الكتاب على العناوين الرئيسية الآتية: أولاً: تمهيد بين يدي الدراسة، ثانياً: العقيدة وأثرها في تكوين الشخصية الإنسانية، ثالثاً: أدلة العقيدة وبيانها، رابعاً: صورة الإنسان وطلقته حجة ودليل على وجوده تعالى، خامساً: العدل، وهو الأصل الثاني من أصول المذهب الجعفري... وعناوين أخرى ذات صلة.
