نستطيع تعريف المثل بأنه "عبارة موجزة يستحسنها الناس شكلاً ومضموناً فتنتشر فيما بينهم، ويتناقلها الخلف عن السلف دون تغيير، متمثلين بها، غالباً في حالات مشابهة لما ضرب لها المثل أصلاً، وإن جهل هذا الأصل". هذا وللأمثال أهمية كبرة من الناحية البلاغية والحضارية، والتربوية، والجمالية والوطنية وغيرها، كما ولها وظيفة تربوية، إذ بما تتضمنه من حكم، هي خلاصة التجربة الإنسانية تساهم في تهذيب الأجيال، وتقويم الأخلاق، وإرشاد الناس إلى الطريق المستقيم. ورب مثل يفعل في النفس ما تعجز عنه مئة محاضرة في الأخلاق والمثل العليا، وما يقصر دونه ألف كتاب في التهذيب الاجتماعية والتوعية الأخلاقية.
ونظراً إلى أهمية الأمثال في التوجيه والتأديب والتعليم، فقد خصص لها سفر خاص في العهد القديم من الكتاب المقدس، فكا ورد ذكرها في القرآن الكريم. ونظراً إلى هذه الأهمية الكبيرة للأمثال، كان من الطبيعي أن يهتم بها العرب جميعاً، وتصنيفاً، وشرحاً، ومقارنة، وتأصيلاً، ونقداً وغير ذلك.
