الأسلوبية علم يدرس اللغة ضمن نظام الخطاب، ولكنها_أيضاً_ علم يدرس الخطاب موزعاً على مبدأ هوية الأجناس. ولذا، كان موضوع هذا العلم متعدد المستويات، مختلف المشارب والاهتمامات، متنوع الأهداف والاتجاهات. وما دامت اللغة ليست حكراً على ميدان إيصالي دون آخر، فإن موضوع علم الأسلوبية ليس حكراً_هو أيضاً_ على ميدان تعبيري دون آخر.
ولكن يبقى صحيحاً، أن الأسلوبية علم يرقى بموضوعه، أو هو يعلو عليه لكي يحيله إلى درس علمي. ولولا ذلك لما حازت الأسلوبية على هذه الصفة، ولما تعددت مدارسها و مذاهبها.
كما يبقى صحيحاً، أن الأسلوبية هي صلة اللسانيات بالأدب ونقده. وبها تنتقل من دراسة الجملة_لغة_ إلى دراسة اللغة نصاً_، فخطاباً، فأجناساً، ولذا كانت الأسلوبية (جسر اللسانيات إلى تاريخ الأدب)، كما عبّر (سبيترز) عن ذلك.
