مفردة "التأمين"، مشتقة في اللغة العربية من "الأمن" وبذلك فهي مفردة تعني أن المؤمًّن له يعيش عند التأمين حالة الاطمئنان وهدوء الخاطر. ولذلك يكشف أخلاق هذه المفردة عن أهدافها وفلسفة ظهورها، أي الحصول على الاطمئنان والشعور بالراحة النفسية. ويستعمل البعض مفردة "سيكورتا" و"سكورته" للتعبير عن التأمين، وهي مأخوذة من المصطلح اللاتيني "ceccrus". ويلاحظ في فتاوى بعض الفقهاء استعمال مفردة "سيكورتا" أو "سيكورته" كذلك تلاحظ مفردة "سيكورتا" في المعاجم الإنكليزية العربية.
هذا وبالرغم من شارة بعض اللغويين إلى طابع العقد الذي تأخذه مفردة التأمين، إلا أنهم ذكروا أيضاً بأنها غالباً ما تدل على معانٍ أخرى كالمناعة في مواجهة الخطر، والطمأنينة، والضمان، وتوزيع الخسارة. كالتأمين من وجهة نظر علماء اللغة هو العمل الذي يه يضمن شخص ما التعويض عن بعض الحوادث ازاء استلام عوض ما. أي أنه عمل يلجأ فيه المؤمِّن بطمأنة المؤمَّن له ازاء الأخطار المحتملة.
أما مفهوم التأمين من الوجهة الشرعية، فهو من الأمور التي يستحسنها العقل ويثني عليها، وهو لهذا من مصاديق المحسنات العقلية. ولو تمّ ضم هذه المقدمة الصغرى إلى المقدمة الكبرى التالية "ما حكم به العقل حكم به الشرع" لتمّ استنتاج حكم شرعي يقول بمطلوبية التأمين. أي أن التأمين أمر مشروع ونافذ ومعتبر.
ضمن هذا الإطار يأتي كتاب التأمين الذي يطرح الباحث فيه على بساط البحث قضية التأمين من خلال مدلولات استند إليها الفقهاء للإفتاء في مشروعية التأمين من النظرة الشرعية. قسم الباحث موضوعه هذا إلى بابين. بحث في الباب الأول في أصول قانونية عقد التأمين وخصص الباب الثاني لمناقشة أصول شرعية عقد التأمين.
