لقد بعث الله الأنبياء الى البشر بهديه وشرائعه، تنساب من خلال سيرتهم العطرة صورة العبادة الصحيحة. وكذا صورة التعامل الحق بين العالمين. فاختار الله من عباده صفوتهم ومن البشر أذكارهم وأخيرهم، واصطفاهم وهيأ كل نبي في خَلقه وخُلقه وعلمه وحكمته ما يتناسب مع من بعث اليهم. ثم هو سبحانه يفضل بعضهم على بعض، وخص كل نبي بتعامل وتكليف، وابتلى كل نبي بقومه.
قال الله تعالى في حديثه القدسي لنبيه محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم: "إنما بعثتك لأبتليك وأبتلي بك". ثم هو يفصل لنا في كتابه أبنما تفصيل عنهم، وجاءت الأخبار المتصلة السند الى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بسيرتهم، فمنهم من أجمل ذكره. ومنهم من فصل ذكره، ومنهم من قصه الله علينا، ومنهم من لم يقصص، ثم جعل ذلك كله لنا عبرة فلم يكن عبثاً من القول يقال وليس ضرباً من الخيال يتلى ولا هو افتراء. {ما كان حديثاً يُفترى ولكن تصديق الذي بين يديه وتفصيل كل شيء وهدى ورحمة لقوم يؤمنون} (يوسف: 111)
