قدر الباحثون المعنيون بالتراث بأن عدد المخطوطات العربية الموزعة في مكتبات العالم لا يقل عن ثلاثة ملايين مخطوط بين نادر ومكرر، وبذا يصبح من الصعب على الباحثين الحصول على المخطوطات، ولا سيما إذا كانت في مكتبات ليست لها أدلة (كاتلوك)، أو لبعد الشقة بين مكان الباحث والمكتبة التي تحوي المخطوطات، فضلاً عن المعوقات التي نضعها بعض إدارات المكتبات، وما تشترطه من شروط في سبيل توفير نسخة مصورة بإحدى وسائل التصوير المتاحة حالياً.
ولما كانت المخطوطات عرضة للتلف والضياع، لأن نسخها محدودة أو أنها فريدة لا نسخة ثانية لها، أصبح من الواجب العلمي والديني القيام بنشرها، وتوفير نسخها المطبوعة، أماناً من الضياع، وحفاظاً على هذا التراث الأدبي والعلمي والديني.
وإن مما ييسر أمر تحقيق هذه الكتب ونشرها، نشر عدد من الكتب الهادية إلى تحقيق التراث والتعامل مع أصوله ما بين أدب وتاريخ وحديث وفقه ولغة، والتي أعدها أساتذة الجامعات والباحثون في التراث لطلبة الدراسات العليا الراغبين في الحصول على شهادة الماجستير أو الدكتوراه أو للراغبين في التحقيق من المشايخ وأئمة المساجد، فضلاً عن النماذج الطيبة من المكتب المحققة التي يجدها الباحث في المكتبات حالياً، والتي ظهر الجهد المبذول في التعرف على نسبة المخطوطات إلى مؤلفيها، وكثرة الرجوع لكتب التخريج، والتعريف برجال السند، والصبر على قراءة الخطوط الرديئة، والتمرس على معرفتها والإرشادات والإحالات في الهوامش الهادية والمفيدة للمبتدئين، والمختصين على السواء.
