تتطور الرواية من سرد للطفولة الساذجة إلى طور النشؤ والتشكل المحدد وصولاً لوضعها مبادئ عامة لحياتها على الأقل، في الجزء الأخير من الرواية، حيث نرى فيه مزيجاً من الشخصيات المنخرطة في حياة الكاتبة في بيئة تقليدية محافظة وتمييزاً شديداً بين الذكور والإناث.
ومع تشجيع والدها وتفتح عقلها على العالم تبدأ بالتمرد شيئاً فشيئاً ومع رفض محيطها لها تبدأ في التقوقع على نفسها معتبرة أنها فريدة من نوعها ومن هنا تبدأ في إطلاق الأحكام على العالم بقسوة دون مجاملة.
